Bio

VICTOR VILLASEÑOR, Biography
Born in the barrio of Carlsbad, California in 1940, Victor Villaseñor was raised on a ranch four miles north in Oceanside. Since his parents were born in Mexico, Villaseñor spoke only Spanish when he started school. After years of facing language and cultural barriers, heavy discrimination and a reading problem, later diagnosed as dyslexia, Victor dropped out of high school his junior year and moved to Mexico. There he discovered a wealth of Mexican art, literature, music, that helped him recapture and understand the dignity and richness of his heritage.

Victor returned to the U.S. at the age of 20. He began to feel the old frustration and anger return as he once again witnessed the disregard toward poor and uneducated people and especially toward the Mexicans. Then a chance encounter with James Joyce’s Portrait Of An Artist As A Young Man, changed Victor’s life. It awakened a desire to confront through literature the problems associated with his cultural heritage that continued to plague him.

After producing 9 novels, 65 short stories, and receiving 265 rejections, Villaseñor sold his first novel, Macho!, which the Los Angeles Times compared to the best of John Steinbeck. This began a journey that would eventually lead to the publication of the national bestseller Rain of Gold. Used by thousands of teachers and school systems across the nation as required reading, Rain of Gold tells the story of Victor’s family, taking the reader from war-torn Mexico during the Revolution of 1910 to the present day.

Villaseñor’s body of works includes a number of nonfiction books, all used in schools throughout the country: The first family trilogy Wild Steps of Heaven, Rain of Gold, and Thirteen Senses; the second family trilogy Burro Genius, Crazy Loco Love, and Beyond Rain of Gold. Other books: Jury: The People vs Juan Corona; Macho!; Lion Eyes.   Several titles are national bestsellers and Pulitzer Prize submitted.   Walking Stars is a little book of nine short stories written especially to inspire youth. And a collection of award winning children’s books, written for ages 2 to 200, each teach an important life lesson: The Frog and His Friends Save Humanity; Goodnight, Papito Dios; Little Crow to the Rescue; Mother Fox and Mr. Coyote; and The Stranger and the Red Rooster.  The screenplay for The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, starring Edward James Olmos, was also written by Victor.

An upcoming HBO miniseries will be on Rain of Gold, and Thirteen Senses with Maya Pictures, Producer.

Villaseñor’s acclaimed written works, as well as his inspiring lectures, have earned him numerous awards and endorsements, including the Founding John Steinbeck Chair appointment.

A gifted and accomplished speaker, Victor Villaseñor, in his candid and heartfelt manner, brings a fresh perspective to a number of universal themes, including pride in cultural heritage, the strength of family, dedication to education and personal achievement, the power of the written word, world harmony and peace.

Villaseñor’s commitment to world harmony and peace is demonstrated through Snow Goose Global Thanksgiving, his nonprofit organization established to promote peace and harmony throughout the world. His self-published book, Snow Goose Global Thanksgiving, describes a simple philosophy that it’s time in human story for women and children to start leading, with men ‘following in front’. Villaseñor’s motto has become “We are all one race. The human race!”

Victor Villaseñor continues to live on the ranch where he was raised.

Hello.. My name is Liz Berrones. I can’t believe I just lent my copy of Rain of Gold to a dear friend after holding on to it’s tattered pages for over 10 years! ROG guided me at a time in my life when being proud of my heritage wasn’t always the ‘cool’ thing to do. I am forever indebited to Victor’s perseverance as a reader, writer, and peacemaker. I teach bilingual children to speak English but make them well aware that they are so ‘crazy loco’ special to have two languages to use peacefully. Send my love and gratitude to Victor. I’d love to see him if he ever comes to Houston, Texas! P.S. I can’t find any info on the HBO series. Can you help me?

    • lindavillasenor

      Hi Liz,

Hello to you and your students. And thanks for your personal feed back on ROG. If you haven’t already, check out Victor’s bilingual children’s books; scroll down book page on the site. And please check events calendar from time to time to see if he’s scheduled for Houston. HBO 7 hour ROG series begins shooting late October this year, to air next year, most likely in the fall. We’ll post info as time nears.

    Nilda,

I me’t your brother, Dr. Villasenor last year at the La Cosecha’s conference. He was very delightful and personable. I read most of his books, liked the Thirteen Senses and learned how much it was related to my family and my husband’s parents. This book touched my soul and I couldn’t help but cried when I read the last part. I am now reading “Burro Genio”. I can relate so much about the way some of his teachers treated him. All my brothers dropped out of middle school because of the way teachers treated them; one of my brothers had ADD (a disorder that was not given too much attention at that time). However, he was talented and gifted with music, creativity, singing, etc. but no one knew except me. Iam the only one who made it against all odds and I also was a victim of discrimination, eventhough I was born in N.Y, but raised in Puerto Rico (which puertorrican are american citizens) Many times I was told to stop speaking Spanish and was dismissed many times and was told that I was not going to make it, and etc, etc. I love writing and reading and when I read the first part of the book where Villasenor spoke to teachers and the many rejections he got, someone inspired me to not give up in anything I want to do not even in my writing (which I have been told many times that I cannot write). Anyway, I love Dr. Villasenor’s books, he is a fabulous writer and Im impressed and like his style and voice…I laugh at the funny things he says, He is not afraid of saying what he wants to say nor afraid of using certain words… Question???? I want to use his books in my classroom to teach children about author’s style and voice, plus using his bio as well to encourage my ELL students, but would you recommend his books for elementary school kids, let’s say 4th and 5th graders? Sorry, for my long comment. : ) God bless !!!

    • lindavillasenor

      Hi Nilda,

Thanks for such a great comment! Hello to your brothers/familia, and thank you for being one of the angel teachers. FYI Victor isn’t a Dr. – but thanks for thinking he might have been able to earn one… Well, about books, Victor does have 5 bi-lingual children’s books. They’re beautifully illustrated. I think they’re worth checking out even though for 4th and 5th graders, Walking Stars would be the choice. It’s a collection of 9 short stories which can be read in class. The first 3 are from when we were kids, then 3 of mama and 3 of papa when they were children in Mexico. And these stories were in Rain of Gold or Wild Steps of Heaven. Victor selected them because they’re so inspiring. Also for these age readers you can use parts of Burro Genius. Please let us know how your students like whatever you select. Go to Victor’s book page at the site for more info.

Hola Victor y linda. Muchas gracias Victor, eres grande!

I have just finished Rain of Gold and reading this book has made me so proud of being a Mexican-American. This book has given me the strength to keep my head up when times are rough!! I just wish people could fully understand that Mexicans are just as equal as everyone else. Many times I have heard from the whites that my father should not be here just because he is a Mexican, but he is just as hard working and amazing as any other person here. With all the put downs it makes me even more proud to be a Mexican-American.

    • lindavillasenor

Wonderful that you have it in you to be proud in the face of discrimination! Yea for nuestra gente – si se puede. And that Rain of Gold has helped you along with finding your pride is, well, just plain fantastic to know. Thank you!

Right now I am reading Burro Genius and all I can say is that it brings tears to my eyes. My family came from Mexico when I was real young and up to this point I can say that those language barriers can truely make you feel stupid. Right now Im in college and I’ve had s0 many hard time that I just want to quit … sometimes I feel like everyone else is smarter than me and I am no good at what I want to become. I did tell myself that I did have to be good at something but sometimes I truely do doubt myself. I had never read a book by Victor Villasenor … right now I haven’t finished Burro Genius just yet but what I have read has inspired me to go on. Muchas Gracias!!

I can’t tell you how greatly your writing has affected me….at age 85! I so admire and respect your parents, Victor, and offer my gratitude for your work in writing Rain of Gold. I want to attend your Snow Goose Global Thanksgiving this year. Do you know the date yet?
My mother, a Mexican, died at a young age, carrying with
her all her experiences, yet I sense her heritage always as it’s in my genes. My father, a gringo, could offer nothing except his
culture, so I grew up with that. But, there is always a tugging at me to know more of mama’s culture. Not speaking her language
is one of my biggest disappointments. Again, many thanks for taking me back to those times of your parents. I can’t remember
having such an amazing time reading!

Hi there. My name is Monica, and I am currently a Junior at Pacific High School. I am reading Victor’s book Rain of Gold for my English class. It is an amazing book, and I’m looking forward to the ending. I have to do presentation on it as well, and well I was wondering if Mr. Villaseñor had any direct words that he could write for me for my presentation. I have loved reading his book, and I am so excited about doing this presentation on it, that I would love to have a little piece of him in it, since it is his book. Any inspirational words, or just anything that he can take the time to say. It would really mean a lot.

By the way, I can’t wait to read more of his books. I usually am not a reader, but reading this book, made me realize that words do go a long way.

Thank you very much for your time.
Hope to hear back soon, Monica.

Victor Villaseñor I am a senior at Rancho Buena Vista High School and I am reading your book “Burro Genius” in my Expository Reading and Writing class for my Autobiography book group and I must say out of all the books I read, I’ve never seen an author reflect about his life with such passion and determination like you before. Before I was never really interested in reading autobiographies because I always used to think they were just facts and summaries but when I read your book, your use of Imagery made me visualize everything that you went through such as discrimination and putdowns and makes me understand more and more what our culture had to go through and still continues even today, me being un mexicano tambien. Since then, I truly appreciate the heritage of my culture, I will do my best to be UN MEXICANO DE LOS BUENOS as you mentioned in the book and que dios te bendiga.

I just want to hear you speak … ANYWHERE I’m so sad I barely became aware of your writing. The way you smoothly incorporate facts and fiction is genius. As my eyes swept across the pages (of ALL your books) I effortlessly imagined I was there, a silent observer. Where are you engaged to speak?

Mr. Villasenor, I have just finished reading ROG for the fisrt time. I had read about 75% of it about twenty years ago but never completed it. It was assigned reading when I was in college. So I must have been way too busy and behind to finish the book. I’m so glad this book is finally available for the Kindle, and I was able to read the entire book in about a week.

ROG is simply one of the greatest books written in modern times. In my opinion, it’s definately the best Latino book that I am aware of. Not only the story, but your style of writing, makes this a classic.

I have heard you speak several times in the last twenty years, and you are an inspiration. I am working on my own family biography. I do not intend to publish it but will have it availabe for my gandkids and great grandkids – just so they’ll know where it was they came from and who it was that got them there/here. So I salute you as an inspiration to this endeavor and will use your work as a guide to get me through this.

Thank you very much for all your good work.

    Davi Silva

Thank you for the kind words. Davi, it’s the most wonderful thing that you’re writing your family history. Generations to come will thank you!

  • Fabiola Jimenez

Gracia’s, thank you so much for the greatest book I have read in my life… it really opened my eyes to more of the things that went in the time of La Revolucion. Greatest book, Rain Of Gold.

  • Rebecca Barbosa

When I finished reading ROG years ago Mr. Villasenor, I was overcome with emotion to the point that I told all my friends & co-workers it was the absolute BEST book I’d ever read! I have continued reading your books as I find them fascinating, and will add your childrens’ books to my grandchildren’s Christmas gifts.

A few hours ago I finished BROG and felt a gentle peace come over me. This book provided the realization that having lost both of my parents within 9 weeks of each other last year (which became my own 9/11) that while they have crossed over to the Other Side, they continue to LIVE! Despite my great loss, I have been blessed in numerous ways as a result of their deaths! I continue to feel their love and God’s…

In closing, I would like to tell you of a vision I had the day right after my mother’s passing. While sitting in my dentist’s chair with my eyes closed, a neon green color came to me and with it, I saw my parents. It appeared that my dad was looking right at me as I saw my mom’s profile. My mom Lupe, suffered with scoliosis for years, but here was my dad holding her straight as they danced! They each stood tall, smiling and healthy! In an instant, they were gone, but I realized they and Papito Dios, had blessed me with the gift of seeing that they were together with Him, and they were happy…. Thank you for re-confirming that my parents are well, through reading Beyond Rain of Gold!

May God continue to bless you as you share His love.

    Rebecca

  • Maria Jimenez

    Don Victor,
Loved reading RAIN OF GOLD as a teenager, I continue to read your other books, but I have just one question…… You mention your mothers familia in your books and their stories, but never have integrated your father’s side (except in rain of gold), would love for you to share more of your familia’s stories with us. Your are an inspiration to the youth, continue your hard work. Saludos de Los Alamos, Ca.

    Maria Jimenez

P.S. In the covers of one of your books, you state that you have a potluck for everybody on el rancho? Is this still true?

  • Helen Caraveo

Many years ago I watched you on TV where you expressed how important it was for you to connect with family and how you researched your family history. I was so impressed with the feeling and the importance that I bought Rain of Gold book for each one of our children (6). The years have passed and now I have reread Rain of Gold and am using it in our local book club for a monthly discussion. Have just finished Burro Genius – I sobbed through most of it. To me the book strengthened the importance for teaching not only in words but most definitely in action, “We are all one race. The human race!” … Pray for peace, harmony and the strength to accomplish it.

  • Xochitl Martinez

I finished Rain of Gold last night and I am beyond emotional. With all humility, I had never heard of you and I wish I had (which says a lot to me about how this country does so little to teach us about California history in high school, which I really think it should since we are Californian and more).

In short, I have been born in much better times but I know what it is like to be Hispanic, of Native/Spanish decent. I recently have come to acknowlege how so much of my turmoil is due to the fact that I am disconnected from my ancestors, the land, and spirituality. And how that is mostly due to all the self-hatred I learned from my mother, and her from her’s and so on. Your book landed on my lap just in time to let me know I am in the right track and that in order to find myself I must find my people and love and accept them exactly as they were and are. So, thank you so very, very much. I says this with tears in my eyes and a happy heart waiting to finally be free of all the self- hate and contempt of everything European.

Where to begin, I had to read your book “Burro Genius” for a class that hasn’t even started. I was so intrigued by your book that I actually finished it in two days and the class doesn’t even start until two weeks from now. This book brought so much emotion, and I could relate. I too, was bullied by two teachers. I failed twice, once due to health problems and the other time (even though I didn’t know how much it really did affect me at the time) was when my parent went through their divorce. I am so glad to hear that you were able to get through those hard times. Me, I still can’t seem to fully grasp that I deserve better. I have always felt that I am not smart enough. I dropped out of high school my senior year due to financial problems however, I am now doing my second Masters. As my sister says to me it doesn’t matter how you start but how you end. I just wanted to say thanks for this book. It has been an eye-opener for me!

    • Delia

      Greetings,

How interesting! I am reading the same book for the same purpose. I am fascinated and hardly can put down the book. I am not reading as fast as you do, but I have made already good progress in a couple days’ time.

The text has made me aware of the influence teachers have on a young mind. Sadly, the impact teachers have is not always positive, but when the student has a strong background, this too can become a positive learning experience – the hard way, though.

I want to become a teacher. This book, as far as I have read it, has shown me that I have a lot more to learn.
I want to thank Victor for his insight and courage to publish his story and giving me another perspective I will need so much for teaching. Thanks for your Love – you have given me right now what I needed so much. I shall push on, tired as I am.

    Hola Don Victor,
I met you in the early 90′s shortly after you published Rain of Gold. I was impressed then and continue to be to this day. Thank you for being such a great role model to our youth, heck to all of us.

How “cosmic” I would stumble upon a website about Victor….The last name caught my eye. I was born and raised in Oceanside, California in the 1960′s. My grandparents, Flo and Karl Bruner, used to talk about the Villasenor Ranch, which had been was adjacent to their property on Belleaire Street until the State — invoking eminent domain — bought up a chunk of land and bulldozed a canyon path for what became Interstate 5. My grandparents always spoke highly of the Villasenor family, their verdant pastureland and their love of horses. Nowdays, it is so difficult to imagine Oceanside ever having been “rural!” Growing up in an atmosphere of blatant anti-Mexican prejucide, I feel very blessed that I became motivated to study the Latino culture and to learn the language. I later became a social worker in Watsonville, California, working primarily with immigrant families. I am now a family therapist; I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where I continue to find many opportunities to work with the growing Latino population here. I am looking forward to reading Victor’s books. Thank you.

    • Leticia Hernandez

You are going to love them!

  • Erica

I just started reading Beyond Rain of Gold, im a huge fan of Mr. Villasenor’s! I started reading Rain of Gold and loved it so I went on to the other books. I want to share these books or would like to introduce these books to someone. What book would be a good starting place or introduction.? This person doesn’t really like to read much either. I thought about giving him Thirteen Senses, but worried he might be lost not knowing the story line. Thank you for sharing your families story! I love your writings!

    Thank you!

I just got done with your book, Beyond Rain of Gold. It has brought kind of an epiphany for me. I always been idolizing money and am stepping back and need to start writing. I guess I am looking for any chance to meet and I need some kind of mentoring thought.
